Youth (Grades 6 – 12)
We are grateful for our wonderful youth at Westminster. All young people, grades 6-12, are welcome to participate in Westminster’s youth ministry programs. Through our ministries we seek to provide:
- time for young people to grow and learn from God’s word.
- opportunities for youth to participate in, and lead Christian worship that ascribes all praise and honor and glory and power to the triune God.
- a commission to serve as the hands and feet of the church in a compassionate ministry that feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, befriends the lonely, and cares for the Earth.
- fellowship gatherings where each, as a blessed and gifted child of God, will know the grace and love of God through Christ Jesus in our congregation and the larger circle of the Presbyterian Church .
Sunday School classes for middle school and high school students begin at 9:50 a.m. in the Annex, the house just west of the parking lot.
Each January, eighth graders (and older youth who have not had the opportunity to participate) begin their confirmation class. Confirmation provides these young adults an opportunity to grow in their Christian faith and learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, a member of his church, and to “confirm” the promises made at his or her baptism. Youth who have not been baptized have the opportunity to do so on Confirmation Sunday. The class meets on Sunday morning during the Church School hour, and for other special gatherings during the five-month period. The class concludes in May with each member having the opportunity to present a statement of faith at a special service of confirmation.
Westminster Youth Fellowship
For grades 6-12, meets Sunday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Our time together includes recreation, a devotion, singing, and a meal – always with a great group of youth and advisors. We also like to meet with youth from other Austin Presbyterian churches for offsite events. Check the calendar page for the most up-to-date schedule.
Under the direction of Shaunna Shandro, the Westminster Youth Ensemble combines the vocal and instrumental musical talents. The ensemble provides inspirational and joyful music during Sunday morning worship.
Along with offering their musical gifts for worship, Westminster youth regularly participate in the leadership of worship as acolytes, scripture readers, and in other portions of the service. They also lead a spirited Youth Sunday service each spring.
Westminster middle school and high school youth traditionally participate in a summer weeklong mission trip. Recent mission trips include Project AYM in Asheville, North Carolina, the Makarios School in the Dominican Republic, and the Heifer Ranch in Arkansas.
Westminster youth participate in Mission Presbytery’s mid-winter conferences and the summer Junior High Jubilee Camp at Mo-Ranch. They also join Westminster members for an all church retreat on the weekend after Labor Day.
John Knox Ranch
Westminster children and youth are active in the summer camping programs at Mission Presbytery’s John Knox Ranch near Wimberley, Texas.
